After the excursion to McRitchie Reservoir I learnt many new things. One of which is how a damp works. Previously I have no idea how it works but after the trip, I learnt that when it rains and the water level at the reservoir rise, there will be a ledge that will be triggered which will cause water to flow out from the reservoir into the drain, this ensure that the reservoir do not overflow. I also learn how to test the pH level of water and also identifying what the reservoir contains.
Moreover we also learnt how human activities can affect the ecosystem. We had a deeper understanding on how activities like carrying of the kayaking boat on the grass patch can affect the grass patches. It could be seen by the areas where grass is absent though soil is present.
Lastly we learnt that there are many plants that live in a single location in more scientific term, community. We had to identify the different plants in a single spot and we realize that a single rock can be the home of 6 plants.
I feel that the excursion was very helpful as it is actually preparing us for the next thing we are going to learn which is ecology. Normally when we go to a reservoir, all we will do is to jog and enjoy the surrounding but not get into details and try to understand nature. Hence I feel that this trip is a very good opportunity for us to learn about our surroundings.
